Despite Foreclosure Crises, Christians Still Tithing

09/26/2008

Nonprofit organizations specializing in mortgage counseling are reporting that the one thing most Christians will not compromise on when adjusting expenses is the monthly tithe to their churches.

Ozell Brooklin, director of Acorn Housing in Atlanta, told USA Today that he has seen desperate homeowners who claimed they would do “anything” to save their homes – anything except allow their contributions to church be reduced. The fervency of the refusal to cut back church giving seems to be stronger among low-income Christians, whether they’re struggling with a mortgage or not.

Barna research reveals that Evangelicals Christians are far more likely to tithe than other denominations. The tithe is an Old English word for “a tenth,” and its presence in churches stems from them Old Testament, in which Israelites paid a tenth of their gross revenue to pay priests, support festivals and feed the poor.
